Spiritual Need no. 2 : Appreciation of Oneself

– Remedy –

WATER – aka Self-awareness & confidence of the truth that you are God’s son/daughter.

Water is the most consumed liquid in the world. It helps us with our survival and sustains our body needs to continue circulating blood as the cells and other organs have to do their bodily functions.

Like water, our spiritual need #2 – Appreciation of Oneself – has such requirements to continuously replenish and rehydrate our self-confidence. But don’t get this in the wrong side of the coin… This is the opposite of that narcissistic thought about “me-me-me“…

This is more of the FACT that YOU are a CHILD of GOD.

Self-awareness is an essential value a person has to have. Many people nowadays experience depression and brokenness because they feel alone and probably misunderstood by others. This is because they are unaware of how precious they are. Plus the truth that their brokenness actually comes from within. Majority of us do not have self-identity. At times we identify ourselves because of the influence of our friends and mostly from the feeds of those “#goals” (of whatever kind) we see on social media. Unaware of our strengths and weaknesses, the only way of knowing who we are is to actually, take that time to get to know ourself.

How? By knowing what we are good at! And what we aren’t good at too.

Knowing what we are capable of, on what we are good at and the opposite of it, – will enable us to excel and admit our weaknesses, thus will allow us to improve and accept who we are.

quote green - iamjmkayne.com

When you don’t feel you are enough, understand that you can conquer doubt by knowing who you are in Jesus.

– Tim Tebow

quotation-marks

In order to process this, try to get a pen and a paper and answer these guide questions: (Note: These are the guide questions from the talk itself.)

  1. Think of someone (same sex) whom you admire most.
  2. What are the qualities I like about him/her which I think I don’t have?
  3. What are the qualities I love most about myself?
  4. What are the qualities I think he/she loves about me?
  5. What are the qualities I have which I think he/she doesn’t have?

Alternatively, I have created two (2) additional activities that may somehow help you dig deeper of your strengths and weakness. You can either use your own notebook/journal/diary/paper or download this free activity sheets.

  • Activity 1 – TALK Guide Questions
  • Activity 2 – WHO ARE THEY? #GOALS
  • Activity 3 – I AM . . .
Download the above activity sheets here > VW Series 002 – WATER (Activity Sheets).

Finally, allow me to impart this inspiring and empowering scripture from our community’s theme this year:

But you are ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own

(1 Peter 2:9)

So who are you!? 🙂

I hope  you make time to do these activities and that this one helps. Let me know in the comments below or drop me an email on hello@iamjmkayne.com.

Be blessed and be God’s blessings!

Gratitude Journal with a Twist!

Gratitude Journal with a Twist!

Gratitude Journal and a twist - iamjmkayne.com

Do you love writing journals?

I do! Or shall I say, I did!

My favorite TV show back in my High-school days was G-mik and Roni/Ronalisa (You’d know who she is if you are a fan… curious? this is her IG) used to write diaries. So as a teen and a trying hard writer (been really trying hard ever since… 🤣 hahaha) I took my own space and started writing diaries! Oh by the way – it was also in High school  that I read Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl – that inspired me to start the journalling too!

Fast forward 2010 ~ 2011 – I found myself less “emo”, so I started to drift away from this habit. I guess social media came and a love life too.

So somehow my “me time” and my Dear Diary moment started to vanish. Until it was totally out. But, I still hoard notebooks of different shapes, size, designs and colors. I guess the teacher in me – still sinks in whenever I am in a bookstore/stationary shop.  I feel like I’m at home – I’m in my haven! 🙂 A part of me still have that “diarist”/journalist soul!

Anyhow – I have started to make a new way of writing journals. As I continue to embark this “creative living lifestyle” I found that a habit I’ve “paused for a while” is worth keeping! – that is – – –

iamjmkayne.com writing
Writing | Journalling | Writing a Diary | Keeping a Morning Pages.
Having a notebook to write your thoughts, ideas and even keeping a Gratitude list!

Now, this post is about that GRATITUDE JOURNAL. . . .

(with a twist! – as the title says! hehe)

I started creating a journal or list of THANK YOU/GRATEFULNESS. The first entry went pretty well.

Day 2 – Another good one.

Day 3 – Still good

Day 4 /5 /6 /7 /8 – – – I suddenly started feeling like – oooppppsss!

What happened?

My list has become a copy and paste . . .

Then I heard in one podcast that I love listening – Happier by Gretchen Rubin! That keep at least 3 rather than just blurting out a looonnng list. Stay very specific and recognize even the smallest things that bring you joy!

So Let’s say:

Today, I am thankful for:

  1. Person – For that smile from a baby I met in the metro.
  2. An Achievement – For today’s safety travel.
  3. Something small – For that smell of a coffee that boosts my mood!

If you think this is the twist – – – well, not yet!

As I continue to explore podcasts, articles, blogs and other TV/Youtube shows on creativity, business, productivity and more – I landed on Marie Forleo’s Marie TV!

She once had a guest that describes similar habit/practice – but instead of simply writing the easy one (even if small and specific) – the guest mentioned that it is better if we take this into a step higher . . .

How?

He said, how about you write 3 things you are grateful in a “different perspective”.

Today, look at life on the other side of the coin.

Write 3 things that brings you stress, worries or something that is not positive. Oppppsss! Stay with me! The twist is here!

Let’s say:

Today, these things bring me a not so good moments:

  1. A Difficult Person at work/home/community (be specific) – he/she wont see this diary anyway.
  2. A bill I missed to pay.
  3. I was late at work/ for an appointment

Now, let’s do the twist!

Today, these things bring me a “not so good moment” BUT! On the other hand I learned to – –(Make them BOLD or underline them on your journal to emphasize that these are the one you are GRATEFUL for and not the stress/negativity.)

  1. For Example – John – he was difficult but I learned to extend more of my patience.
  2. A bill I missed to pay – I missed to pay this because I haven’t keep it on my notes/calendar/reminder list. So I learned to take note and mindful about it.
  3. I was late at work/ for an appointment – I learned to set an hour or 2 to make sure to be on time.

Vary your list on day to day basis. This exercise will allow you to be mindful of looking at the positive side of the story. Most of the time, we focus only on one side that we fail to see the brighter one.

If one day, you find yourself not having any negative moments – then no need to make it with a twist. Go the simple way by just writing what is positive.

This is just an alternative.

Which I personally love and so I am sharing it!

TakeHome-ily: Open up for the Lord

From yesterday’s Gospel – I’d like to share a few reflections.

Gospel 12 Aug 2018 - iamjmkayne.com

Jesus reveals himself as the “bread of life”.  Majority of us have a hard time accepting this. But let us try to be open to the mysteries of God. Let us be open especially when it comes to our faith.

quote green - iamjmkayne.com

Kahit gaano ka ka-“ganda” (ang tao o bagay man) kapag sarado ka – hindi tutuloy sa atin ang biyaya ng Diyos. However good or beautiful you are (as a person/things/situation) if you are closed and not willing to share your life. You would not see the blessings of the Lord.

quotation-marks

Be OPEN for the LORD.

Open up – starting with these three concepts.

1 – Open up even your questions, even your doubts.

“Bulong ng bulong, kapag tinatanong ayaw naman mag open”. You keep on whispering/saying this and that – but when asked you don’t share and open up. Only to end up – you, start to share it to the wrong person causing it to become a “gossip”. Open it up to someone whom you think worth trusting and sharing. If you are a member of a community – open it to your servant/leaders or elders.

Open up not only your joys but even the dark sides of your life. Joy shared is happiness shared. Worries shared are lesser worries because someone else is praying for you.

2 – Open up and God will teach you

How will the Lord teach? Listen. Listen. Listen

Silent when written the opposite way is LISTEN. You can’t listen without silence. When you allow the avalanche of sounds and noise your emotions and thoughts – you might miss the message from God. A message that sometimes revealed through the silence of our heart. Stay open to silent moments. To prayer times – prayer time in just simply listening. Go to adoration chapels or have your silent prayer time.

3 – Be open that God is contemporary

Contemporarymeaning – belonging to or occurring in the present. (NOW. PRESENT HERE)

God is contemporary. He is present. He is with us. He is in our journey. He knows what we have; what’s our thoughts, our prayers and what’s in our heart.

Don’t look too far.

Don’t look far behind.

Because He is walking with us. He is here. He might even be using someone for you to open up. For you to share your life at. He could be the priest to whom you confess to. He could be that stranger in the metro, bus or somewhere else in an unexpected moment. Or He could simply be that family member, a brother/sister that both friendly or difficult to you. Step back and look at the situation in a new pair of eyes (the eyes of faith) – that God is contemporary. Everyday. Every. Moment.

By being open, just like opening your hand – you allow blessings to fall into it. You allow God to give you what you are supposed to receive.

Question: What is the “bread” that God is asking you to eat (or receive) today?

Whatever it is – look at it in the eyes of faith. Be open, be blessed and be God’s blessings!

VW Series 001 – The SUN (Sunlight)

From VW Series Intro, comes series 001 – The SUN (or Sunlight)

Out of the original outline, I have personally came up with the concept of “how to take care a plant”… and thought of ways/words to compare it to the theme of being in a vineyard or farm. Questions like: how to make it grow? What will it take from being planted? to being pruned, rooted and eventually bear fruits…?

So I came up with these: the basics include the sun/sunlight, water, fertilizer and human. Praise God for guiding me and that I somehow managed to relate it similarly to the SFL Life verse from John 15.

This VW Series will now be focusing on these “remedy/cure” or ways on how to take care our own seeds: our spiritual needs.

Spiritual Need no. 1 : The Experience of the Healing & Empowering Love of God.

– Remedy –

SUN / Sunlight – aka GOD

How?

A. HOLY MASS

According to the latest survey – churchgoers tend to decline in the recent years. Majority of Catholics would opt to be  “Sunday Christians” and thus try to make Sundays (or Fridays for our case in the UAE) a date with God. Sunday/Friday Christian – how about the others days of our lives? A challenge to all Christians then is –  how are we going to maintain this relationship and commitment to Christ?

As much as possible, being physically present in the church is important – but in the event that you aren’t able, these Youtube channel will get us through:

Sambuhay TV Mass – they publish Sunday masses and other important mass days.

JesCom TV: The Word Exposed. Cardinal Antonio Tagle breaks down the First Reading, Second Reading & the Gospel + some reflections.

Both channels also help us to get ready & be prepared once we are in the church. As they both give us ideas and overview on the day’s readings. But then again – let us all try to be in church and not just a TV/laptop viewer.

/// #InMyHeart💚 – In our case, we do both. A Saturday/Sunday mass + Sambuhay/The Word Exposed.

B. PRAYER

Aside from our daily morning “Thank you Lord for this new day” and evening – “Thank you for today Lord”… do we actually spend time talking to Him? Are we able to protect that time to be with our creator? I’d like to suggest to find a time:

  • At least start with 5 minutes a day.
  • Put an alarm if necessary.
  • Show up and set it as another date/time with God.
  • From 5, build up to 10 minutes… Don’t know how to start? Use the ACTS method.

A – Adoration , open your prayer with adoration to God. Say your words of admiration for Him. That “Lord you are Great, you are faithful, you are a great provider” and more.
C – Contrition , follow it with a sorry – asking for forgiveness of our shortcomings, say: “Father, I am sorry for the things I failed to do for your glory. For missing the Sunday mass, for not following your commandments” . . . etc.
T – Thanksgiving. This time say your gratefulness. “Thank you Lord for this life. For my job, for the good health of my family” . . . and so on.
S – Supplication. Finally – here ask for the things you hope to have. Pray what your heart desires. “Lord, help me to be a good Christian, build my faith stronger. May you allow me to see you in every person I meet”. Or you may go specific with things like our daily needs. “Father please provide us with our daily food, keep my family safe”. . .

And simply close it with Amen or a Glory be  . . .

/// #InMyHeart💚 – the Daily Gospel is a must – it has been a habit every since I joined the community. My very first social posts on social media is always about it. I get them on these links:

Kerygma Readings and Daily Gospel.

Make this a habit. Make this a daily affair not just when we need Him.

C. TEACHINGS/REFLECTIONS/RETREATS

Being in a community like CFFL (Catholics for Family & Life) or CFC-FFL gives us a constant session of teachings, reflections and retreats. It is indeed a blessing to be a part of this kind of family. There is joy in community life and there is a constant reminder of faith and love as we continue to grow in His vineyard.  So why not give community life a try?! 🙂

If you aren’t a member of a community yet – for sure our parish has some formation teachings – so why not grab that opportunity. Again, this one needs commitment for us to get nourished.,,, But if I am you – join CFFL 🙂

/// #InMyHeart💚 – I have been in the community for the past 8 and half or 9 years now and although it’s not one easy – bed of roses life – we chose to stay because we are patients that needs the Physician. In our early community days/years – we have literally followed the teachings by heart, even the hard ones. So far – God has been faithful ( I mean He is always faithful) – so probably _ I’ll just say and also  my constant prayer – is that Lord – may you see me and Kokobear faithful till the end of our days” Amen.

He is the sun. So we must keep on being shined upon his grace & love. Always, everyday & forever.
