This Year’s Theme: Keep Creating 2019

2019: New Year’s Battlecry

For a while now, I’ve been trying to come up with ideas and concepts for my 2019 theme.

⚡I’ve recently completed Shonda Rhimes’ book – Year of Yes and inspired that I could also have it for 2019, making it as my year of YESes… but a part of me wasn’t that convinced.

Braver2019 also came up as I’m follower of Arriane Serafico of The Purposeful Creative. But the word braver doesn’t really echo in my heart…

⚡Then comes Clarity, Consistency and Authenticity. The triad of values a creative must have! 💫 ✨. Although I want all these 3 words, I am still in search for something simple yet a real flagship of what’s #inmyheart and mind.

I’ve come across this amazing video and has been inspired, it’s for all creatives and artists too:

Then all along, I have been so much into this word that even a shorter term/ syllable/s of it brings joy and happy thoughts. Fireworks of ideas, colors and concepts entertains my mind and I feel like I’m in love with it! 💞 hahaha

Marie Forleo, one of my inspirations, model and thought leader continuously say that we are what we think of ourselves. Our thoughts manifest who we become. Therefore it’s best that we keep our mind with positivity and reframe our mind with the things that we want to invite into our lives.

Finally after a long while, I went back reading a few pages of one of my favorite creativity book – THE BIG MAGIC, I found the answer and my official battle cry/theme for 2019! Inspired from these lines which actually brings me to tears! Nope, I’m not over writing here – it really happened. I struggle a bit in coining what I want to look forward to this year and even pushed this blog post after a week and 2 (days to be exact! 🙂 ) and Big Magic is simply the one who can clear it out! I feel like my soul is the one saying them. So much of my truths are literally brought to life in this book and I can’t just stop appreciating it. Here’s an excerpt:

… I also want to live the most vividly temporary life that I can be.

I don’t just mean physically but mentally, spiritually and intellectually.

I don’t want to be afraid of the bright colors, or new sounds, or

big love, or risky decisions, or strange experiences, or weird

endeavors, or sudden changes or even failure. . .

I am going to spend as much as time as I can creating delightful

things out of my existence, because that’s what brings me awake

and that’s what brings me alive.

– Liz Gilbert, Big Magicquotation-marks

So, without any further ado, my theme for 2019 is:

#KeepCreating2019.

This year, I’d like to manifest more creativity into my life. The Creative Passport is close to its completion and although it’s not officially released yet my commitment to it remains. Aside from this project, I’m also incorporating more splashes of creative lifestyle, more projects and hopefully I’ll be able to bring forth these things within the year to come. Inspired from FLIQ Media’s hashtag on creativity #DivineSpark, I would like to bring God honor with my creative side and keep touching with that spark in me.

✨Our GIFT, and sharing it to the world is our responsibility. Not sharing it would be a big sin. A touch of creativity, a touch of His Divine Spark! ✨

Lastly, this time aside from all the GOAL setting list of to dos, I’d like to create another version of the theme or battle cry of the year by adding an answer to this specific question:

*WHAT DO I WANT TO FEEL THIS 2019?

💚💚💚 I want to feel that I am CREATIVE, I’m HEALTHY and ABUNDANTLY BLESSED financially and in all aspects in life. 💚💚💚#KeepCreating

🥂 Cheers to a fun, creative and abundant 2019! 🥂

Stay blessed and let’s all be God’s blessing to others.

When Self-Love means taking care of our Mental Health

Self-love is a therapy for mental health.”

A pressing topic of the world nowadays is the concern that most people have a hard time figuring out because of how the society seemed to brand it. Many people think that “Self-Love” is being selfish and it caters the “ME, MYSELF & I attitude”. Even though many of us misunderstood Self-Love that way, allow me to straighten up things in this blog.

Self-love is defined as a regard to our own wellbeing and happiness. Self-love in this situation (and in this blog post specifically) is SELF-CARE.

Remember, self-care is a priority. We need to take care of ourselves first before we can extend our help, care and love to others. It’s not a luxury to give our self the love and care we deserve, only then we can fully share what we have to the people, the community around us and to the world at large.

Now, I am equating Self-Love/Care to our Mental Health because these topics go hand in hand. In order to take care of our mental health, we have to give importance to our self; “love and care of our self”.  Although both are trendy topics, there’s still a great need to focus more on them… Self-love and care are misquoted to focus on treats like spas and beauty regimen, which is a skin-deep concern. A vanity! We have to look at it beyond and see it for the real importance. It’s positive effect to our senses.

Understanding self-love/care requires deeper understanding and a positive shift of mindset. It will require another full blog post for that. But don’t worry I will share more about that later on. For now, let me make it short. SELF-LOVE/CARE is taking care of the major aspects of our life: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and all of the sensory aspects.

Leaving our self-care unattended may lead us to depression and possibly end up to a deeper mental health issue. As a matter of fact, many people with mental health issues are untreated. Thus, a deteriorating a mental state has been affecting our quality of life.

What is MENTAL HEALTH then?

Sometimes we think that it is similar with mental illness, but illness is about disorders that occur in the brain such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Mental Health on the other hand, covers our social, psychological and emotional well-being. It is essential because it can affect every aspect of our life. It damages how we think, feel and act. It changes our mental and emotional state that eventually affects our physical action.

Mental health usually comes from stress. Over the course of our life we experience mental health problems with our thoughts, moods and behavior. Biological factors from our genes, life experiences like trauma, abuse and family history are few of the factors that contribute to mental health problems.

The good news is – we all can get the help we need.

The very first step to handling mental health issue to awareness. True, that most of the time people with depression are in a denial stage, therefore it is very much important that we keep an open communication with the people that we trust. Share what’s bothers you. Share what are the happenings in your life… What stresses you?, what is dragging you?…

Probably some of us might also find it hard to share it to our loved ones, because we don’t want to burden them. Well, an online therapy is an answer to this. BetterHelp is one of the leading mental health advocates who has licensed and experienced counselors that help individuals in this field, making it accessible, affordable and convenient.

A part of self-care (and love) is being honest to our self that we need help. And if we find ourselves lost in the midst of the people to whom we are not sure if they will understand or judge us, seeking an online-therapy could be our viable option.

The significance of self-care in our mental health matters because filling our life with empowering activities and happy thoughts help us to reframe negativity. Because whatever our mind holds, the more influence we have than we realize.

Stay healthy and God bless,

2018 Year-end Review : Passion Projects & Breakthroughs

2018 year-end review - ppbreakthroughs 2018 - iamjmkayne.com

It’s that time of the year when I go about the highlights (and lows) of the year as a review of what these 12 months have been.

2018 has been filled with extraordinary challenges, lessons, growth and love. If this year has been tough on you and those you love, I understand. The important thing is, we keep going because God is greater than any of these problems and we come up victorious with Him by our side.

If you’ve been following me, you’d know that each year I have a theme and this year its Passion Projects and Breakthroughs 2018. That’s where the hashtag #PPBreakthroughs2018 comes. Below are a few of the highlights of this year and sure thing, I’d like to share about them too.

Highlights of 2018 #PPBreakthroughs2018

  • Kokobear’s new job
  • Moving to Dubai
  • Dan2x Wedding
  • Grey’s Birth
  • 5+ Months vacation in Cebu
  • My Surgery
  • Podcast Interview
  • 10 Collaborations / Sponsored posts
  • Completed Free Course for TCP
  • Started The Creative Passport (TCP) Workbook
  • Pitched The Creative Passport (TCP) Workbook
  • A full year of CFFL Dubai victories and challenges

So, Kokobear (my husband) was hired for a company here in Dubai which led us to moving from Abu Dhabi (after 9 years) to Dubai to culminate a decade of being in the emirates. Yes, it’s been 10 years now since we both first stepped into this beautiful land. And we are still starting to explore Dubai!

With the change of environment and city I opt to take that opportunity as well to go on a vacation for the new year + the upcoming wedding of my younger brother. Dan-Dan wed Yvette on 2nd Jan 2018 and so I prepared and created their wedding invite, a DIY passion project for me. Check it out here G+M DIY Wedding Invitation.

DIY Wedding Invite5

Then comes a God’s Gift to our family!!! Our newest additional “Belt” member. GREY is my first ever nephew! Such a cutie. You’d probably see a few photos of him on my instagram : @jmkayne.

So from late December to till almost end of May, I spend 5+ months at home. Stayed in Cebu and took a few visits here and there. Met a few friends but most importantly did faced a health breakthrough. Yes, I had a surgery. This story will be shared more soon. I have to say through that this breakthrough is pretty much amazing and takes a lot of courage to share. Something happened that made me never the same after that! 🙂

While I was still in Cebu, I did have an opportunity to be interviewed for a podcast! The beautiful couple Chris & Tiara of Our Food Adventures featured and interviewed me for things about visiting CEBU! 🙂 Listen to the episode here: Tropical Paradise, Swimming with Whale Sharks, and Crispy Pig Skin in Cebu, Philippines with Julie-Mae from IAMJMKAYNE.

This year, I’m happy to share that I have made 10 collaborations for 2018. A target I made earlier this year. These are both more on marketing/ads blog post versions. Here are the 2018 Collaborations I made.

This March, I planned to create the Social Studies online class but I was derailed to other stuffs and ended up with another course. Yet, still so happy that I opt to complete this free course right after delivering it to CFFL Dubai. Enroll in this FREE Course at thecreativepassport.teachable.com. It’s about Speaker’s Workshop – Speaking God’s Words.

Also, I have been creating The Creative Passport workbook. This idea came in when I was on the plane back to Dubai and a creative workbook excites me. I actually have a timeline/deadline on this but currently way behind it. Although, I have to say that I was able to pitch it into a publishing company here in the UAE. I hope it catches their attention and that they will give me a chance to complete it.

This year as well is a great opportunity to be of service to God. I think I have shared in the previous blog posts, that He has anointed Darrelle and I to take care of his vineyard in Dubai and become the Area Servants. It started with a tough road to journey on but He simply made all ways straight and provided everything and everyone that we need. I’d probably dedicate another blog for this story, I’m starting to get emotional and catching up my thoughts because there seemed to be a lot to share. 🙂

TheKokobears 7Dec2018 on iamjmkayne

Finally, the year is about to close and up to this day (as I write this post) I still haven’t have any chance of a real interview for a job. It has been almost 2 long years. I feel like it was just yesterday, but I have to admit … I missed working. I missed being in action and being busy. I missed being in a corporate environment… and more so, I missed receiving that text from my fave text-mate! 😀 hehehe

Also, here’s a short IG post – an open letter to Dubai . 🙂
Dear Dubai - iamjmkayne.com
Dear #Dubai,
Thank you for the past 6 months! I’m excited to roll a new year and see what you have in store for me and Kokobear 🐻… Two days before 2019, I reflect on the lessons, failure, emotions and encounters I have in 2018. I praise God for all the blessings and burdens of both situations and people… Indeed they’ve made me stronger and faithful. Dubai, can we get more acquainted next year please? 😉
Your new Dubai-er 😂
@jm_kayne

With all of these things, I still believe that God has a greater plan than whatever it is on my mind. And I continue to wait patiently for His perfect plan and timing.

God bless,

Updated Podcast List for 2018

JM Kayne’s updated list of Podcast for 2018

2018 updated Podcasts List - iamjmkayne.com

It’s time to update my list! In 2017, I shared this list of my top 5 favorite podcasts and this year, more podcasts have taken my attention. Here are new discoveries this 2018.

Read on!

🎙Magic Lessons by Elizabeth Gilbert

Yay!! She’s my favorite writer. And no, not because of Eat Pray Love, but because of BIG MAGIC (Book). Everything inside it and all related to her idea of creativity just resonates the inner me. She speaks my truth in this book that I am totally in love with it. Also since I started binging her videos and books, I also landed in this podcasts where she explores more about this idea of a creative genius and more magic lessons!

🎙Marie Forleo Podcast

I learned about Marie because of Lavendaire. She’s my current #HowToBeYou po for business. She talks about business and other creative endeavors. Also interviews big time thought leaders. Her style is just refreshing!

🎙Lavendaire by Aileen Xu

Aileen is another creative inspiration. Her Youtube channel motivates me and her personality is just nice. Her ideas resonates mine and I see myself in her. She talks about being an Artist of Life , self-care and more.

🎙IDEO U – Creative Confidence

In my quest for Creativity, I happened to learned about Design thinking with Arriane Serafico of The Purposeful Creative (her podcast is on my 2017 list). I started to browse about IDEO and I hope to get a chance to enroll one of their courses someday.

🎙Design Matters by Debbie Milman

This is a little bit higher level of creativity and design. I am honestly overwhelmed with the guests and the topics but I still enjoy listening to these topics because it explores so much about creativity and different types of artists. I am taking them one time at a time. hihi

🎙Binge Mode

Because I love Game of Thrones, I enjoyed this podcast! Although I have done watching all 7 seasons and now anticipating for the last season, it is so much fun to recall them one by one in each of the episode that Mallory Rubin and Jason Concepcion tackles them and also helps me to understand more on some parts that I missed. They’ve done all 7 seasons and now they are on to the next movie – Harry Potter! 😀

🎙Our Food Adventures

This couple is just fun to be with! I know, because I have been on their website… Last April I was so thrilled to share my very first podcast interview with Tiara and Chris! They interview different people from different part of the globe and talks about the must sees and eat! 🙂 Mine was about Cebu Philippines.

🎙By the Book

(not on the photos above)

In this podcast, you get to hear their personal take on Self-Help Books. The Pros and Cons of it and if they will recommend it or not. Well, the first book they’ve taken? The Secret! 🙂

Do you have your favorite podcast? Share it below, I’d love to give it a try!

CFFL #TVM19 Released!

CFFL The Vineyard Magazine TVM19 cover - iamjmkayne.com
This issue’s cover is designed by Bro. Gilbert Sioson of CFFL Sharjah.

Note: Starting this issue, I will be sharing the cover of CFFL – The Vineyard Magazine and recognize the talented people behind each issue’s cover. For the past issues’ covers, click here > TVM issues # 01 – 18 covers. Also, visit and like like, thumbs, up, vote icon our Facebook Page as well. 🙂 Finally, I’ll also put on my letter, the “Editor’s Note” too!

#TVM19

– Editor’s Note –

I have been out of the country for the past five (5) months, in fact I missed the Destined for Greatness Echo conference. I was back home in Cebu right before New Year and I was a spectator of all the events happening inside the community via social media. Even though I was there, I see to it to always take a glimpse of what are the current teachings and happenings – – – to – of course use them to be a part for this issue.  I have to mention though that #TVM19 was supposed to be released during our June CFFL 37th Anniversary Sportsfest, but due to lack of entries it is moved this month of August (now Sept for LP schedule). Praise God we made it!

Another important announcement too, is that from this year, we are releasing the issues every National GA. Therefore – expect 3 issues per year from March – which is usually our Echo Conference season, June – anniversary month & finally November – which is the pastoral month.

In this issue, expect loads of photos from the past 3 conferences from HFL, SvFL & SFL ministries. Our Photo Gallery too has much more, plus the a special space for the successfully concluded IBC Meeting – to which we had the privilege to host.

Sharings, personal lesson learned and take homes, a movie review, a sister’s journey to becoming or being beyond 30, more poetry and simply the very core realization of being blessed beyond measure.

So, wait no more! Dig in and be inspired!

May God be praised.

Praying for you and your family!

PS: I made this list as a part of the Resources page 🙂

My TEACHERS, through these years . . .

They were my mentor, guide and model.

As part of the Teaching Room, and because school season has recently kicked-off once again (in the Philippine setting/ summer now in the UAE). Setting aside the hustle and busy days of purchasing school materials and thinking of the current tuition rates

Podcast Interview @ Our Food Adventures

JM Kayne Interview for Our Food Adventures - iamjmkayne.com.png

Podcast Interview @ Our Food Adventures.

Another breakthrough and milestone I’ve faced this year, is this opportunity to be interviewed for a podcast!

I was first introduced to listening to a podcast way back 2016 when I get hooked to a certain Youtube video that talks about podcasting. From then on, I started to discover amazing podcast shows which I listen to whenever I am in transition such as riding a bus going somewhere or sometimes when I’m cooking. In fact, I have shared last year my top 5 favorite podcast here.

Never did I thought that I will – one day become a guest of a podcast! ha ha 😊 #HappyAndSurprisedMe

Earlier this April, I received in my inbox an email asking me to be a guest in their podcast. Tiarra and Chris from Our Food Adventure have started their podcast where they interview different people around the world sharing their foodie experience and travel tips. I happen to represent, 🇵🇭 Cebu Philippines!

So without further a do, here’s the link to that interview!

INTERVIEW LINK HERE

In case you’re curious of the complete text interview, I have created the below script for you to be guided. 😊

Listen on and please let me know your thoughts in the comment below!

God bless,

Disclaimer: I missed a few questions that I left them unanswered in the podcast, 😂
so I took the chance to write what I was supposed to say/answer in the below transcript. lol

Here are the questions! 🙂

Tell us about you and your blog.

Well, let me start by introducing myself, my real name is Julie Mae Bacus – Chavez. Kayne came up because way back 2000 Yahoo messenger was a thing and for me to get an approved username, you need to have a unique name, JM, Julie, Julie Mae were all taken. So I coined that alias and added it o JM, thus JM Kayne was born which is my URL address as www.iamjmkayne.com.

My blog’s title is #InMyHeartJMKaynesBlog. It’s a personal blog that I started way back 2008 when I moved from Cebu to Abu Dhabi, UAE. Originally I used my blog to share personal experiences making it like an online diary.

But as time goes by, I’ve learned more about blogging and so I ventured into other topics like travel, food reviews, stories of life, family and faith, a few public service blog posts and just last year, I started receiving collaborations or sponsored blog posts. Overall, my blog is about the stories #inmyheart.

How would you describe Filipino food to someone whos never tried it?

Filipino food is actually a fusion of many different cuisine… so a little of Spanish,Japanese and American foodie have influenced the food culture in the country..

Common dishes are meat, vegetables, grilled fishes and sea food, and a wide variety of soups and noodles. … Thus, Filipino food can be defined by its combination of sour, sweet, salty and spicy…sometimes all in the same dish.

But if you are to ask a Filipino on what food is most popular, probably Adobo will be on the top list. It’s made of meat from pork and chicken to seafood braised in garlic, vinegar and soy sauce.

Is there a difference between Cebu local cuisines from other Philippine islands?

Well, Yes, basically Adobo for Cebuanos is dry, but for other parts of the country it has a little sauce. Then for all other recipes, we have our own little version that we tweak according to our tastebuds. Some cities use more sugar or some cuisine has coconut milk in its major recipes.

What one of your dish in Cebu everyone HAS to eat?

Lechon! It’s a must try. Have you heard of it?

It’s a pig dish, seasoned and cooked by skewering the entire pig in a pit filled with charcoal. It will be roasted on all sides for several hours making the pork skin crispy and a distinct feature of the dish.

If your’e familiar with Anthony Bourdain?  He actually tagged Cebu’s lechon as the best pig ever!

What is one dish that people should stay away from?

Nothing really. I can vouch that all food in the Philippines are really good.

Questions about traveling to Cebu for the first time:

Is there anything first-timer travelers should prepare for before leaving to Cebu?

I think the best you can do is just read about Cebu and get insights from different threads online.

Is there anything first-time travelers should bring to make traveling there easier?

Well, I don’t think there’s a specific item to bring – I guess Cebu has almost every thing you’d probably need – from groceries, to travel accessories  (unless its really native from your own country.) And personally I believed that as a traveller/tourist, one of the best way –  I could contribute to a city or place I am visiting to buy local. I’m not saying this because I am from Cebu but in general, whether you’re in the States, or some parts of Europe or Asia – we extend our blessings by helping the people and the tourism economy  of that city/country.

What are some misconceptions you’ve heard about Cebu?

I think some foreigners think that Cebu itself is a country.. probably because we have our own internationally airport that takes direct flights even without stopping over in Manila which is the capital of the Philippines.

Another one is that, Cebuanos  or Filipinos as a whole tend to deceive  foreigners when it comes to prices and taxi fares etc. But I can’t say its not true, but I’d say it’s a stereotype and that it doesn’t apply to all.

What would you recommend first-time travelers to do in Cebu?

Try to visit Cebu during January. It’s when Sinulog is held – the biggest festival celebrated around the city. There is street dance, some religious activities and a month full of looking back to history and faith. (Haven’t shared this exactly – but this is what I actually want to say)

What is something first-timers should avoid?

Avoid going around Carbon Market and Colon Street –it’s downtown proper – wearing expensive accessories made of gold and silver to avoid attracting bad people. I’m not saying it’s a dangerous place, but it’s just a caution to avoid untoward incidents. Over-all Colon street is a must see place too since it is the first and oldest street in the Philippines.

As a first-time traveler, what phrases should they know to communicate better with the locals?

Well, I’d like to teach you at least 5. You ready?

  1. First is KUMUSTA – which is How are you?
  2. SALAMAT – Thank you
  3. TAG PILA – How much
  4. ASA (ang) – Where (is)
  5. AYO – AYO – Take care

*BONUS: BAI / BAY – Dude/girl (applicable for both man and woman.)

>>> By the way, there is a follow-up question that Christ throw and I misunderstood the question. So please – – –  let me answer it here. So, he asked, if they use these words (above) will they answer us back to the same language or should we continue speaking English?

Answer: After the above basic words you can go back to speaking English. Because it is the second official language of the Philippines, so communicating with the locals wont be difficult. 🙂

Why should people visit Cebu?

I can tell a lot of reasons why you must visit Cebu… but let me just say a few sentences why…

Cebu is tagged as one of the best islands in the world by Conde Nast traveller magazine. Immersed into this beautiful city that can offer you the best the from the sea, mountain and other natural resources. Filipinos are known for our hospitality, so it is a must visit not only with these site but most especially because of 3Cs – that’s Charming and Cool Cebuanos. (Haven’t mentioned this words during the interview, the questions I was a bit of everywhere ( lol hahah first timer moments) and so I was not able say it. But these words are exactly the reason why you should visit Cebu! 🙂

*Please be prepared to let us know:

3 specific restaurants/dishes that you loved

I have mentioned Adobo earlier and then Lechon – which is best paired by puso.

It’s a rice wrapped and boiled in a  diamond shared casing made of woven coconut leaves – usually called hanging rice.

And then in Cebu, I would definitely recommend visiting Larsian. It’s the barbeque haven in Cebu where you could eat our version of barbeque from meat and sea food and some chicken and pork innards. (intentines, gizzards, blood, chicken feet, pork ears and more)

2-3 things to do you enjoy doing there

My 3 MUST TRY/VISIT are:

  1. Sto. Niño Church– it’s one of the oldest church in the country which will celebrate it’s 500thyear on —
  2. The white sand beaches either in Bantayan Island or going south to Moalboal or Osloband swim with the Whalesharks.
  3. Finally, my favorite adventure is to do Canyoneering, where you chase waterfalls and jumps over canyoons and rivers.

Rapid fire questions:

What’s the best thing you ever ate?

– Tuppokki – I’m a big fan of Korean food! hahah

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten?

– A dish in one of the restaurant we’ve visited in Maldives called Fried chicken but way too different from our concept of a fried chicken. 🙂

If you had to be a tour guide for one place in the world, where would you pick?

– Aside from Cebu, I’d like to be a tour guide in ITALY. Haven’t been there but its our next stop hopefully this year or early next year. I am amazed and in awe of its beauty and to be able to visit it especially Rome, is a dream come true.

If I were intimidated to travel to another country, how would you encourage me?

– Well, I’d simply tell you that experience is the best teacher. Whatever it is that intimidates you in visiting that place, will remain a misconception or stereotype to a certain group of people unless you experience it first hand. You will never know if this is true or not unless you faced it yourself. So go ahead, avoid what ifs, face your fears and explore!
