This Year’s Theme: Keep Creating 2019

2019: New Year’s Battlecry

For a while now, I’ve been trying to come up with ideas and concepts for my 2019 theme.

⚡I’ve recently completed Shonda Rhimes’ book – Year of Yes and inspired that I could also have it for 2019, making it as my year of YESes… but a part of me wasn’t that convinced.

Braver2019 also came up as I’m follower of Arriane Serafico of The Purposeful Creative. But the word braver doesn’t really echo in my heart…

⚡Then comes Clarity, Consistency and Authenticity. The triad of values a creative must have! 💫 ✨. Although I want all these 3 words, I am still in search for something simple yet a real flagship of what’s #inmyheart and mind.

I’ve come across this amazing video and has been inspired, it’s for all creatives and artists too:

Then all along, I have been so much into this word that even a shorter term/ syllable/s of it brings joy and happy thoughts. Fireworks of ideas, colors and concepts entertains my mind and I feel like I’m in love with it! 💞 hahaha

Marie Forleo, one of my inspirations, model and thought leader continuously say that we are what we think of ourselves. Our thoughts manifest who we become. Therefore it’s best that we keep our mind with positivity and reframe our mind with the things that we want to invite into our lives.

Finally after a long while, I went back reading a few pages of one of my favorite creativity book – THE BIG MAGIC, I found the answer and my official battle cry/theme for 2019! Inspired from these lines which actually brings me to tears! Nope, I’m not over writing here – it really happened. I struggle a bit in coining what I want to look forward to this year and even pushed this blog post after a week and 2 (days to be exact! 🙂 ) and Big Magic is simply the one who can clear it out! I feel like my soul is the one saying them. So much of my truths are literally brought to life in this book and I can’t just stop appreciating it. Here’s an excerpt:

… I also want to live the most vividly temporary life that I can be.

I don’t just mean physically but mentally, spiritually and intellectually.

I don’t want to be afraid of the bright colors, or new sounds, or

big love, or risky decisions, or strange experiences, or weird

endeavors, or sudden changes or even failure. . .

I am going to spend as much as time as I can creating delightful

things out of my existence, because that’s what brings me awake

and that’s what brings me alive.

– Liz Gilbert, Big Magicquotation-marks

So, without any further ado, my theme for 2019 is:

#KeepCreating2019.

This year, I’d like to manifest more creativity into my life. The Creative Passport is close to its completion and although it’s not officially released yet my commitment to it remains. Aside from this project, I’m also incorporating more splashes of creative lifestyle, more projects and hopefully I’ll be able to bring forth these things within the year to come. Inspired from FLIQ Media’s hashtag on creativity #DivineSpark, I would like to bring God honor with my creative side and keep touching with that spark in me.

✨Our GIFT, and sharing it to the world is our responsibility. Not sharing it would be a big sin. A touch of creativity, a touch of His Divine Spark! ✨

Lastly, this time aside from all the GOAL setting list of to dos, I’d like to create another version of the theme or battle cry of the year by adding an answer to this specific question:

*WHAT DO I WANT TO FEEL THIS 2019?

💚💚💚 I want to feel that I am CREATIVE, I’m HEALTHY and ABUNDANTLY BLESSED financially and in all aspects in life. 💚💚💚#KeepCreating

🥂 Cheers to a fun, creative and abundant 2019! 🥂

Stay blessed and let’s all be God’s blessing to others.

Passion Project Series: Pursue your Creative Curiosity

Read: Five (5) Reasons to Start a Passion Project

No Passion? No Problem!

How to Start Your Passion Project

by exploring your “Creative Curiosity”?

Passion Project Series - No Passion No Problem - iamjmkayne.com

“Passion”, most of the time seemed to be a daunting word – a “BIG word”. I met a friend back in college who says, she thinks she doesn’t have a talent… back then I don’t have the right words to say – that actually everyone does. So I just answered her that maybe she hasn’t discovered it yet. Indeed now, I realized we all have – we just need to take the time and effort to discover it and learn more about it.

These steps are simple, doable action steps that you can start brainstorming now.

Here’s my take on how to get started:

1 iamjmkayne.com

Step 1 – Brainstorm/Dumping Ideas

Whenever asked, what are you most passionate about – our mind wander and we start to have this long list of things we want to do. In fact, you are not alone. Many creatives would love to do this and that or maybe this or this or that or that… sounds pretty “a lot” right?

Let me be specific: I love teaching, I also love hosting/emceeing, I enjoy writing, I find drawing/painting relaxing. I also think that I would love to explore cooking and baking… well – the truth is there are more.

So what I did, I took my specific notebook for ideas and started dumping them all. When I say dumping – I mean writing them all.

CALL TO ACTION: Get a pen and a paper or dedicate a specific notebook for your creative pursuit and use a page or two to do brain dump. Meaning use this page to write all the things that you are interested in. Let’s say you want to paint, write a song, start a blog/vlog, exercise, prepare healthy food, create a poem/haiku, draw, sew etc. Just let them flow. Write as many as you think you are interested and curious about. No judgment here.

Step 2 – Trim Down/Pick at least 3

Now this is step is a bit difficult. If you find it too soon to cut into your top 3, I suggest you do (from 10 to 5 then final 3).

Hey, I just want to say – there is no rush.

Take your time to weigh them in. Don’t be pressured to finish them right then and there.

3 iamjmkayne.com

Step 3 – Evaluate

Now from three, here comes the more specific and judgment moment. For your top 3, evaluate how-well do you actually know the ins and out of this project. There could be 2 possible options on this.

First, you know and you are well verse on this matter – so it is easy for your to proceed with step 4. Second, if you may find that you are truly curious about this but not so sure on where to start or probably you think you need a more specific skill/s to learn it. Then, in this event I’d like to suggest:

CALL TO ACTION:
3a. Find someone who could help you, let’s say a friend that you think who has more experience in this field.
3b. If you want to dig deeper and really take on the higher road, maybe you can buy a book about it.
3c. Finally, enrolling into a short course would also help. For example you want to pursue baking, and books/ Youtube isn’t your preferred way of learning. Then a short course would work. Hop on to Google and look for a nearby training center in your city.

Step 4 – Plan/ Choose “the ONE”

From the many ideas, you now have to narrow them down and choose ONE that you are most passionate/curious about.

This doesn’t mean that you will forget all the other list of curiosity you have on step 1. It only means that for a certain duration of time, you get to focus on one thing. Pour out love, passion, effort, time and more on it. Which hopefully you’d finally find your gem! A talent or passion you long to cater and nourish.

CALL TO ACTION: Once you’re ready to go. Start your 3 months plan on how are you going to proceed and explore this passion project. I have created a free 3-month planner for you to help this. Download here. (The Creative Passport 90-Day Planner)
In this planner and step, you will then take into consideration the duration of your passion project. If you’d like it to be continuous and sustainable then you have to incorporate it in your day-to-day schedule or on which timeline best suited.
It’s been tested and proven that doing passion project requires time. You don’t look for time, you create it. In our busy & sometimes chaotic schedule plus the fact that scrolling social media and watching videos online; our time is consumed out of the blue. Therefore, scheduling passion project time and intentionally adding it to our daily routine matters.

5 iamjmkayne.com

Finally, Step 5 – START.ACT.ENJOY

Writing a plan of action with a timeline helps you get a better result. For example, you would want to explore blogging.

SAMPLE:

First, I will set a timeline on the things I’d like to accomplish:

  1. Learn how to make a blog – Read articles and guide for 1-2 months (Jan-Feb 2019)
  2. Browse Ideas and research sample blogs that I would want how my blog would look like. (march-Apr)
  3. Create my blog, start to write down topics/posts – May
  4. Publish & Launch Blog (June)
  5. When should I publish new posts? (Weekly? Monthly? Daily? etc.)

CALL TO ACTION: START. So many times, we get this idea and we keep on thinking about it. Wrote it on our diary/notebook or somewhere but still daunted in actually starting it. In fact, even this workbook took a lot of time for me. Procrastinating, overthinking and just simply taking my time without clear reason why. The big leap of faith is when you actually DO IT. Sit down, dive in, and release the first draft of whatever you want to create. One of my favorite author Elizabeth Gilbert always injects this important lesson: “Above all, most importantly BEGIN!”

Also, enjoy and take it easy. The main reason of having a passion project is to mainly enjoy the process and take away your time from the busy and stressful life at work and of all other lemons that life throws to us. Therefore, enjoy the process. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

* * *

If you wonder why I mostly use “Creative Curiosity” instead of simply dropping the word Passion, it’s because one of my favorite author & creative – Liz Gilbert’s  on Oprah’s Soulful Sunday mentioned her encounter with the huge load “passion” may bring to some people – so this is her take on it – hope it may enlighten you further. Check out her talk here.

Everyone can be CREATIVE!

On my earlier posts, I have defined what creativity is for me.

Yes, it takes courage to proclaim it but again I do believe that everyone can be creative. So, this time, I’d like you to relate more to it. That’s why in this blog post I’m sharing my thoughts on what a creative person is . . . or who are these creatives?

You are a creative if you are – – –

  • an artist – of any form

  • a teacher

  • musician (singer, lyricist, guitarist, pianist and all other instruments)

  • poet

  • writer, novelist

  • DIY enthusiast

  • graphic designer

  • actor/actress

  • directors, costumes designers

  • painter

  • dj/vj

  • speaker

  • flower arranger

  • architect / engineer

  • copywriters

  • storytellers

  • ads creators (print, audio and video)

  • blogger /vlogger

  • fashion trendsetter, tailors, dressmakers/seamstress

  • event organizers

  • and the list goes on . . . ultimately, YOU are one!

Now — don’t worry if your creative pursuit (or profession) isn’t on this list because whatever you are into (creatively), you’re an artist of life. You are a creative no matter what!

A creative is an artist in any form of art. It’s not exclusive for musicians, writers or painters. Creatives are people who sees the world a little differently than others. S/he is an individual who may usually influence others not only through their personality but by the gifts and talents that are innate in them.

S/he is a thought leader. Sometimes s/he doesn’t know what s/he does. Very relatable right? 🙂 haha

So, what does a creative exactly do?

A creative CREATES. S/he creates something for the mere reason of personal pleasure. She writes just to write, he sings/dances just to feel the music within and just to be entwined with pure joy as the tone and rhythm goes around the whole room. She crafts ideas both made and not made yet.

So a creative creates whatever it is that he/she feels that the world calls him/her to create.

A creative follows and breaks the rules to accomplish what needs to be born.

With this definition, I know that once in our life we have that thrill and call to do something. To create something. Therefore I strongly believed that everyone can be creative!

And yes, you! You who are reading this — is a creative too! After all you won’t land to this page without that inkling that you are one. 🙂

What type of creative are you and how do you define what a creative is? Share it on the comment below.

Don’t let that creative light within you blinkers…

Go on and create! Create, create create! 🙂

God bless

My Creative Mantra

TCP Calendar 2019

I have been following Lavendaire (Aileen Xu) for almost 6 months now and she is definitely inspiring me to be creative (among others). As I continue to follow her – I happen to bumped into her mini-activity of creating a Creative Mantra; an affirmation about who I am as a creative.

So here is my declaration!

quote green - iamjmkayne.com

I am creative.

I am passionate and worthy to share my talent and skills to the world.

I am confident of being God’s creation, therefore I know I am special.

I am destined for greatness.

#TheCreativePassport
#DivineSpark
#TalentsForHim
#DestinedForGreatness

Creative Mantra is your personal declaration of who you are as a creative individual. It is your creative manifesto. A declaration (published and verbal) of your intentions, motives, views on creativity – on creating anything. Your affirmation to create, create and create! And as my writing hero – Elizabeth Gilbert asks: Who gets to decide if you are creative? (a legitimate artist) – no one but YOU!

So go ahead, have your own manifesto. What’s your #CreativeMantra?

Share it on the comment section below 🙂

God bless,

Creativity

Creativity takes Courage - iamjmkayne.com

Henri Matisse nailed it in saying “Creativity takes Courage” – true indeed!

“CREATIVE”
“CREATIVITY”
“CREATIVE LIVING”
Big words!!! Yes they are!

I believe the very reason that Matisse said that it takes courage because being “creative” – most of the times looks like a highfaluting word in such a way that there must be something great, sparkling or amazing! A high level personality inside you. But personally, I think everyone can be creative. We just have to unleash it and be open to possibilities.

When we create something, out of our passion or any creative expressions through writings, arts, music, DIYs etc, it is putting out ourselves to the world (whether within our inner circle or to the social media world). Thus displays both of our strengths and vulnerability. The world then sees a part of who we are. Most probably judge us with our own output. A few may also praise. Majority won’t care at all.

Courage then is essential. With the above facts of who and how many are they . . .  it is up to you if you want to pursue that creative life.

As for me? Ohh YES!

I personally believe that everyone can be creative. Because it is not what we have, it’s what we do.

Be reminded as well that whatever we create comes from the Creator and so whatever I am doing –  I do it for His glory.

Over the next few days, months or even years, my creative journey will be using these hashtags  #TheCreativePassport #CreativeCuriosity #CreativeGenius #CreativeLiving #Lala  #DivineSpark as I put myself out of the world of creativity.

Stay with me? Cheers to this journey of courage!

Be blessed & be God’s blessings!

Gratitude Journal with a Twist!

Gratitude Journal with a Twist!

Gratitude Journal and a twist - iamjmkayne.com

Do you love writing journals?

I do! Or shall I say, I did!

My favorite TV show back in my High-school days was G-mik and Roni/Ronalisa (You’d know who she is if you are a fan… curious? this is her IG) used to write diaries. So as a teen and a trying hard writer (been really trying hard ever since… 🤣 hahaha) I took my own space and started writing diaries! Oh by the way – it was also in High school  that I read Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl – that inspired me to start the journalling too!

Fast forward 2010 ~ 2011 – I found myself less “emo”, so I started to drift away from this habit. I guess social media came and a love life too.

So somehow my “me time” and my Dear Diary moment started to vanish. Until it was totally out. But, I still hoard notebooks of different shapes, size, designs and colors. I guess the teacher in me – still sinks in whenever I am in a bookstore/stationary shop.  I feel like I’m at home – I’m in my haven! 🙂 A part of me still have that “diarist”/journalist soul!

Anyhow – I have started to make a new way of writing journals. As I continue to embark this “creative living lifestyle” I found that a habit I’ve “paused for a while” is worth keeping! – that is – – –

iamjmkayne.com writing
Writing | Journalling | Writing a Diary | Keeping a Morning Pages.
Having a notebook to write your thoughts, ideas and even keeping a Gratitude list!

Now, this post is about that GRATITUDE JOURNAL. . . .

(with a twist! – as the title says! hehe)

I started creating a journal or list of THANK YOU/GRATEFULNESS. The first entry went pretty well.

Day 2 – Another good one.

Day 3 – Still good

Day 4 /5 /6 /7 /8 – – – I suddenly started feeling like – oooppppsss!

What happened?

My list has become a copy and paste . . .

Then I heard in one podcast that I love listening – Happier by Gretchen Rubin! That keep at least 3 rather than just blurting out a looonnng list. Stay very specific and recognize even the smallest things that bring you joy!

So Let’s say:

Today, I am thankful for:

  1. Person – For that smile from a baby I met in the metro.
  2. An Achievement – For today’s safety travel.
  3. Something small – For that smell of a coffee that boosts my mood!

If you think this is the twist – – – well, not yet!

As I continue to explore podcasts, articles, blogs and other TV/Youtube shows on creativity, business, productivity and more – I landed on Marie Forleo’s Marie TV!

She once had a guest that describes similar habit/practice – but instead of simply writing the easy one (even if small and specific) – the guest mentioned that it is better if we take this into a step higher . . .

How?

He said, how about you write 3 things you are grateful in a “different perspective”.

Today, look at life on the other side of the coin.

Write 3 things that brings you stress, worries or something that is not positive. Oppppsss! Stay with me! The twist is here!

Let’s say:

Today, these things bring me a not so good moments:

  1. A Difficult Person at work/home/community (be specific) – he/she wont see this diary anyway.
  2. A bill I missed to pay.
  3. I was late at work/ for an appointment

Now, let’s do the twist!

Today, these things bring me a “not so good moment” BUT! On the other hand I learned to – –(Make them BOLD or underline them on your journal to emphasize that these are the one you are GRATEFUL for and not the stress/negativity.)

  1. For Example – John – he was difficult but I learned to extend more of my patience.
  2. A bill I missed to pay – I missed to pay this because I haven’t keep it on my notes/calendar/reminder list. So I learned to take note and mindful about it.
  3. I was late at work/ for an appointment – I learned to set an hour or 2 to make sure to be on time.

Vary your list on day to day basis. This exercise will allow you to be mindful of looking at the positive side of the story. Most of the time, we focus only on one side that we fail to see the brighter one.

If one day, you find yourself not having any negative moments – then no need to make it with a twist. Go the simple way by just writing what is positive.

This is just an alternative.

Which I personally love and so I am sharing it!
